Old dwelling place of the Vaughans, still retains a few marks of antiquity, but most features effaced on conversion to farmhouse about mid of the last century. Thickness of walls & moat around the extensive buildings alone remain to attest to former importance. Said to have been erected by Thomas Vaughan 1430. (1) Built on a naturally defensive site. First mentioned in an Inquisition Post Mortem of AD 1251. Consists of a series of buildings in a block with a detached solar hall on the W constructed between the late 13th century and the 18th century. Dendrochronology dating found the oldest part was possibly Building G, the SE block that had reused timbers in the roof dating to 1267, an undercroft in Building B the NW block dated to AD 1307. The central building (C) had a timber framed core of AD 1619-22 and the close studded wing of B, the NW block was AD 1666. The detached solar block had a repair timber dated to 1452, it may therefore be considerably earlier than this. (2) (3) Some observations by members of the Woolhope Club on visiting Hergest Court including an illustration of a wall painting. (6)
