Moated Site (Possible Castle), Southwest of St Michaels Church, Breinton

Ringwork protected on S side by steep river bank. Level interior, oval in plan 34m x 20m, rising 0.2-1.5m above surrounding sloping ground. Perimeter bank with entrance in N, rises 0.4m above interior. External ditch 10m wide remains on E and W sides. Holloway immediately to W leads down to former crossing of Wye (1)
Excavated 1922 but results inconclusive. 1959-62 further excavation of walled embanked enclosure was Medieval and domestic in character. Building foundations included cellared portion of main building. Entrance to enclosure on N side where remains of stone gateway discovered. Occupied c1150 abandoned in C13, although probably continued as stock enclosure. Kays suggests site may have been grange. Dean & Chapter of Hereford held land here 1201 (2)
Motte & probable bailey. A D-shaped shell keep on a ringwork against a steep river bank. Excavation has indicated internal buildings. Bailey boundary difficult to discern, but obviously associated with the Church enclosure. (6)
About 20 years ago a metal detecting club went over this site over several days. They found many coins, though these were never reported. A spindle whorl has also been found on a separate occasion in the orchard by the church. (7)
