SMR Number

Grid Reference

Across Wye on main Hereford-Ross road. Built of local red sandstone ashlar. Authorised 1597, completed in two years. Said to have replaced wooden bridge but pontage for loss of ferry right granted so doubtful. During Civil War one of arches on Hereford side destroyed (one nearest shore?). In 1914 it was reinforced, parapets rebuilt, casing of southerly piers and 4th pier N side reset. 6 spans, piers have cut waters on both sides, semi- hexagonal refuges, N arch is chamfered and segmental pointed. Other arches have 3 chamfered ribs. C18 sundial. (1)
N parapet destroyed by traffic during WW2. (2)
Members of the archaeology section of the Woolhope Club visited the site on 01/03/92. Note was made of what appeared to be buried remains of another wharf or retaining wall on the north bank. (3)
There was an ancient ford here, replaced by a ferry in the medieval period plus a temporary wooden bridge. A stone toll bridge was constructed in the late 16th century, completed by AD 1600. A causeway from the bridge to Ross was restored and improved in the early 18th century. The bridge carried a toll road connecting Gloucester and Hereford. By the 18th century a goods trade for Ross by river used the quay or wharf at Wilton. A decline of trade after the completion of the Hereford and Gloucester canal in 1845 and Hereford to Ross railway of 1858, led to the disuse of the river and wharves. (6)
