Hampton Court

The house, then called Hampton Richard was presumably built by Sir Roland Lenthall who had a licence to crenellate in 1434, It was modernised in the early C18 & altered & restored in the first half of the C19. The quad plan and much of the C15 walling has been preserved, The gatehouse, chapel and porch are the least altered parts. The E, S & W fronts have no ancient features. (1)
There is no mansion in Herefordshire that can vie with Hampton Court in interest or beauty. Sketch c1700. 1871 (south front) In spite of successive remodelling retains much of its ancient appearance "little poole" built within "the toppe of this house". Leland cistern to which reference could be readily traced a few years ago. Full descrip & history. 1435 permission to crenellate & empark 1000 acres. (2)

(3) Work in gardens confirms that land has been in continuous use as open pasture (4) The owners of the house were the Leinthalls 1410-1510, Coningsby 1510-181-, Arkwrights 1810-1912, Burrells 1912-1924, Herefords 1924-1972 and then a variety of owners in the 20th century.
